When something life-threatening or shocking happens the aftermath of surviving lives on in your body for months, years and sometimes decades. We often feel overwhelmed by this but don’t notice how we’ve remained in survival mode. This effects our health resulting in long-term, chronic conditions and pain that impacts our quality of life. That’s why we start with your body in moving towards healing. We cannot thiink if our body is sabotages our thoughts.
Somatic therapy starts by establishing physical safety and predictabilty with Meriel. It involves compassionate recognition of what’s happened tracking body-senses and simple movement prompts. In time, choice-making encourages self-compassionate understanding of your feelings and relationship with your body and becomes a way to explore different ways of being.
This is a no-touch approach. Instead, Meriel creates a space for you to be in-charge of any sensations and movements you may, or may not, choose.
Somatic therapy is particularly useful for those who’ve experienced conflict, warfare, bullying, rape or sexual abuse, domestic violence or abuse, neglect, isolation or displacement and for people who’ve grown up with parents with addictions or live with addication themselves.
Body-based therapy may also resource those experiencing loss and grief, complex grief or anticipatory grief.
